Roam worked with Ballymore to deliver 216 fully funded 7kW EV charging sockets across six locations at Royal Wharf, giving residents convenient access to charging where they live.

The development

Royal Wharf is a large riverside neighbourhood in London’s Royal Docks, developed by Ballymore in partnership with Oxley.

Spanning 40 acres, the development includes 3,385 homes alongside shops, restaurants, community facilities, green space and its own Thames Clipper pier. With thousands of residents living across the neighbourhood, convenient access to EV charging is an important part of supporting everyday electric travel.

Unlike a smaller apartment block with a single car park, Royal Wharf required a coordinated residential charging solution across several buildings and parking locations.

The challenge

Residents living in apartments do not always have the option to install a charger in the same way as someone with a private driveway.

At a development the size of Royal Wharf, the solution also needed to work across multiple residential locations while remaining straightforward for residents and the property team.

The key requirements were to:

  • Bring convenient EV charging closer to residents’ homes.
  • Deliver charging across six separate locations.
  • Create a consistent experience across the development.
  • Use the available building supplies at each location.
  • Avoid upfront investment from the client.
  • Provide ongoing management and resident support after installation.

That called for more than a collection of standalone chargers. Royal Wharf needed a managed network that could operate reliably across the wider development.

The solution

Ballymore chose Roam to deliver a fully funded residential EV charging network across Royal Wharf.

Roam funded the agreed infrastructure and installed 216 7kW charging sockets across six locations:

Cutter House, John Cabot House, Caravel House, Henry Hudson Court, Banyan Court & Spinnaker House.

The chargers were connected using the building supply available at each location. This allowed charging to be introduced across the development through a coordinated approach designed around its existing residential environment.

The rollout went live in phases during June and July 2025, beginning at Cutter House before expanding across the remaining locations.

Why 7kW charging works for residents

Residential parking naturally provides longer dwell times.

Residents can plug in while their vehicle is already parked and allow it to charge over several hours. That makes 7kW charging well suited to apartment developments, where convenience matters more than completing a rapid top-up in a few minutes.

Rather than making a separate journey to charge, residents can build charging into their normal routine. They arrive home, plug in and carry on with their day.

How residents use the chargers

Each charging session is recorded individually through Roam’s charging platform, allowing residents to pay for the energy they use.

This removes the need for the property team to read individual meters or manually divide electricity costs between residents. It also creates a consistent charging experience across all six Royal Wharf locations.

With charging available within the development, residents have a convenient alternative to relying entirely on public charging away from home.

Fully funded and fully managed

Royal Wharf was delivered through Roam’s fully funded model, removing the upfront cost of the agreed charging infrastructure and live chargers for the client.

Roam also manages the charging service once it is live. This includes:

  • Charger and network management.
  • Remote monitoring.
  • Maintenance.
  • Charging software.
  • Resident billing.
  • Usage reporting.
  • 24/7 driver support.

This gives residents access to ongoing help while reducing the operational workload for the property team.

Royal Wharf now has 216 EV charging sockets available across six residential locations, creating widespread access to convenient charging within the community.
