Is signing up for a Roam membership worth it?

Project overview

Is signing up for a Roam membership worth it?

If you’re wondering whether you should stick to pay-as-you-go or make the monthly investment in Roam membership, here we’ve broken down the differences so you can make the most informed choice to suit you.

How Roam Pricing Works - PAYG vs Membership

Pay As You Go (PAYG)

With PAYG, you simply turn up, plug in, and pay for what you use with no subscription. Depending on where you charge, Roam’s PAYG price varies slightly by location, but most commonly will be 54p per kWh for fast charging (22kW and below) and 66p per kWh for rapid charging. You may also see an upfront authorisation hold, which is often refunded after the session, but can take up to 5 days depending on your bank.

This method of EV charging is great for occasional top-ups, however there are other pricing options available for drivers who charge more frequently.

Membership pricing

Roam offers a membership which is only £7.20 per month. Our memberships provide you with discounts on the per-kWh price.

Our members typically get about an 8p per kWh discount compared to the non-member rate in many locations.

With our David Lloyd partnership (and similar promotional offers), you can even get that membership for free. Such as if you are a David Lloyd member at locations which have our chargers installed on the premises, meaning you get to benefit from the kWh discount without the monthly fee.

Important: exact pricing and discounts do occassionaly vary by site and it’s impossible for us to list flat membership tariffs across all locations, so we recommend checking the app to review the tariffs at your preferred charging point before you charge.

How much could you save?

Here’s the formula which most EV drivers will use to determine cost savings:

Let’s say your EV charging session is an average 45kWh. If Roam’s membership gives you 8p/kWh off compared to PAYG then:

  • Your savings per full charge ≈ 8p × 45 = £3.60
  • Therefore, after just 2 charges, you have covered the cost of the monthly membership

If you charge three or more times a month, the savings climb even more quickly.

This table shows your monthly savings with the cost of the Roam membership already deducted:

Charge frequency per month Estimated savings vs PAYG
3 charges ~£3.60
4 charges ~£7.20
8 charges ~£21.60
12 charges ~£36.00
16 charges ~£50.40

So, you can see that this means if you’re a regular electric commuter, charging at one of our locations, the membership very quickly pays for itself.
