A simple guide for EV charging etiquette

A simple guide to EV charging etiquette, including tips on using public chargers responsibly, avoiding blocked bays and helping keep charging accessible for everyone.

Project overview

As EV use increases, more drivers are relying on public charging points. If you are using a public EV charger, then being considerate helps everyone get the charge they need with minimal hassle.

Here, we’ve listed some practical tips to follow for good charging etiquette:

1. Don’t block in chargers

Once your vehicle has reached your desired charge level, unplug it from the charger and move it elsewhere. Staying parked at a charger after you’re finished can delay other drivers, especially where time limits apply. An easy way to remember to do this is by setting a reminder on your phone to check when your car is finished. If you have charged using the Roam app, you will recieve a notification on your phone when your charging session is complete.

2. Be smart about your charging time

Different cars and chargers offer different speeds, so plan your session accordingly. If you only need a small top-up, avoid using a fast charger if a slower option is free. This helps keep quicker chargers available for those who require larger top-ups.

3. Only use charging bays when needed

If you aren’t planning to charge your vehicle, then avoid parking in designated EV charging spaces so they remain free for those who need them. When using charger bays, please avoid taking up more than one space or blocking access to other chargers.

4. Respect other drivers

Be aware that other EV drivers may have different needs. For example, they might have larger batteries or be undertaking an urgent journey. If someone is waiting and you’re nearly done, and it is safe to do so, consider finishing early to allow them to charge their vehicle.

5. Keep cables safe

Make sure your charging cable is tidy and secure so it doesn’t create a trip hazard or get damaged. Most chargers lock the cable to your vehicle during charging.

Following these basic guidelines makes charging fairer and smoother for everyone. By being mindful and respectful, you can help to build a more positive EV community and ensure that everyone can continue their journey completely hassle free.
